In honor of Summer (and thirsty Thursday, which is totally a thing!), today we’re celebrating my very favorite hour of the day: HAPPY hour. I mean, how does one resist loving an hour dedicated to making you happy with boozey beverages?!? Exactly…
We do a lot of home “happy hours” these days, and I’m not complaining one bit! Honestly, I’ve been over the bar seen for years now (what can I say? I started young!), but it’s still nice to switch it up sometimes and sip on something a little more gussied up than my usual glass of red. The New York Sour is a totally gussy! In the most awesome way, of course.
One of the best things about this cocktail is that it’s a girly-guy drink. Suuuuuuure, it’s pretty, slightly sweet, and can totally rock a paper umbrella or colorful straw, BUT, when it comes down to it, this drink is all business. You’ll get what I mean by that after a few sips 😉
With bourbon, red wine, and a very simple-simple syrup, this pretty little cocktail packs a punch. We like drinking them slowly early in the evening (outdoors if possible), but I could also see these making a brunch table pretty.
There’s nothing like a whiskey and wine to get the party started. Cheers!
The New York Sour – Recipe from Epicurious
Ingredients:
2 ounces rye or bourbon whiskey
1 ounce fresh lemon juice
1 ounce simple syrup
1/2 ounce fruity red wine (such as Shiraz or Malbec)
Instructions:
Combine 2 ounces rye or bourbon whiskey, 1 ounce fresh lemon juice, and 1 ounce simple syrup in a cocktail shaker. Fill with ice, cover, and shake until outside of shaker is frosty, about 30 seconds. Strain into a rocks glass filled with fresh ice. Gently pour 1/2 ounce fruity red wine (such as Shiraz or Malbec) over the back of a spoon held just above the drink’s surface so wine floats on top.
Beautiful drink.. Love the deep red colored layer on top!
I like bourbon and I love red wine….why have I never combined them? Sipping this on the porch while watching sparkling fireflies sounds perfect for this weekend. Thanks!
Totally loving this cocktail, Ashley! Cannot wait to make it…mine will be with bourbon, of course! Thanks muches for sharing this cocktail recipe. I am totally down with The New York Sour! xo
This drink has my name all over it….not to mention it’s beautiful!!
This sounds like such a great drink – love that sourness from the lemon and the warmth from the bourbon and red wine. So good!
What a gorgeous drink!
oh yes please, i love it.
How have I never met this cocktail before? So grateful you introduced us.
We’ll add these to our menu when we finally meet 😉 xo
New York Sours sound and look awesome! This is the first time I’ve heard of this cocktail and I’m completely intrigued. Thirsty Thursday definitely needs to be a thing in my house!
