In honor of Summer (and thirsty Thursday, which is totally a thing!), today we’re celebrating my very favorite hour of the day: HAPPY hour. I mean, how does one resist loving an hour dedicated to making you happy with boozey beverages?!? Exactly…
We do a lot of home “happy hours” these days, and I’m not complaining one bit! Honestly, I’ve been over the bar seen for years now (what can I say? I started young!), but it’s still nice to switch it up sometimes and sip on something a little more gussied up than my usual glass of red. The New York Sour is a totally gussy! In the most awesome way, of course.
One of the best things about this cocktail is that it’s a girly-guy drink. Suuuuuuure, it’s pretty, slightly sweet, and can totally rock a paper umbrella or colorful straw, BUT, when it comes down to it, this drink is all business. You’ll get what I mean by that after a few sips 😉
With bourbon, red wine, and a very simple-simple syrup, this pretty little cocktail packs a punch. We like drinking them slowly early in the evening (outdoors if possible), but I could also see these making a brunch table pretty.
There’s nothing like a whiskey and wine to get the party started. Cheers!
The New York Sour – Recipe from Epicurious
Ingredients:
2 ounces rye or bourbon whiskey
1 ounce fresh lemon juice
1 ounce simple syrup
1/2 ounce fruity red wine (such as Shiraz or Malbec)
Instructions:
Combine 2 ounces rye or bourbon whiskey, 1 ounce fresh lemon juice, and 1 ounce simple syrup in a cocktail shaker. Fill with ice, cover, and shake until outside of shaker is frosty, about 30 seconds. Strain into a rocks glass filled with fresh ice. Gently pour 1/2 ounce fruity red wine (such as Shiraz or Malbec) over the back of a spoon held just above the drink’s surface so wine floats on top.

Ohh yeah I’m in on this happy hour! Agreed on being over the bar scene, it’s just too loud and expensive, ha!

Although I rarely drink, this New York Sour looks mighty good!

I love this! My husband has this theory that brown sugar simple syrup goes with brown liquor and white sugar simply syrups go with clear liquor, I think he’s on to something.
I love that this has bourbon and red wine, two of my favs.

Oh, you’re killing me with the beautiful boozy drinks! No booze for me this summer 😉 This is such a pretty drink, but it has a flair of drama to it – perfect!
