In honor of Summer (and thirsty Thursday, which is totally a thing!), today we’re celebrating my very favorite hour of the day: HAPPY hour. I mean, how does one resist loving an hour dedicated to making you happy with boozey beverages?!? Exactly…
We do a lot of home “happy hours” these days, and I’m not complaining one bit! Honestly, I’ve been over the bar seen for years now (what can I say? I started young!), but it’s still nice to switch it up sometimes and sip on something a little more gussied up than my usual glass of red. The New York Sour is a totally gussy! In the most awesome way, of course.
One of the best things about this cocktail is that it’s a girly-guy drink. Suuuuuuure, it’s pretty, slightly sweet, and can totally rock a paper umbrella or colorful straw, BUT, when it comes down to it, this drink is all business. You’ll get what I mean by that after a few sips 😉
With bourbon, red wine, and a very simple-simple syrup, this pretty little cocktail packs a punch. We like drinking them slowly early in the evening (outdoors if possible), but I could also see these making a brunch table pretty.
There’s nothing like a whiskey and wine to get the party started. Cheers!
The New York Sour – Recipe from Epicurious
Ingredients:
2 ounces rye or bourbon whiskey
1 ounce fresh lemon juice
1 ounce simple syrup
1/2 ounce fruity red wine (such as Shiraz or Malbec)
Instructions:
Combine 2 ounces rye or bourbon whiskey, 1 ounce fresh lemon juice, and 1 ounce simple syrup in a cocktail shaker. Fill with ice, cover, and shake until outside of shaker is frosty, about 30 seconds. Strain into a rocks glass filled with fresh ice. Gently pour 1/2 ounce fruity red wine (such as Shiraz or Malbec) over the back of a spoon held just above the drink’s surface so wine floats on top.

I like bourbon and I love red wine….why have I never combined them? Sipping this on the porch while watching sparkling fireflies sounds perfect for this weekend. Thanks!
