Gooey Chocolate Orange Brownie Cookies are insanely decadent and delicious!!!
Chocolate Orange Cookies
Hello, hello! Here are those cookies I teased you with on Instagram yesterday…
Chocolate and orange BROWNIE cookies, to be exact. They’re rich, chewy, and SO chocolatey. The fresh pop of orange balances everything out and adds an incredibly unique and intriguing flavor profile. I baked a few dozen for a party last weekend and left with nothing but crumbs and requests for the recipe! That’s how I measure recipe success 😉
How to make Chocolate Orange Cookies
Tips and Tricks for Recipe Success:
- You will need semi-sweet chocolate and orange chocolate for this recipe. I used Lindt intense orange and Lindt semi-sweet chocolate (not sponsored! just the truth.), but feel free to use your favorite brand. Just be sure you use real chocolate for this recipe, and not chocolate chips! You can click here and here to see other orange chocolate options.
- The batter will need to be scooped, not rolled. It will be much different in texture than your typical cookie dough, but don’t be alarmed by this! To make the scooping step as easy as possible, I like to use a lightly greased 1/4 cup measuring spoon to scoop up the cookie dough.
- Make sure you leave a good inch in between each mound of cookie dough – they spread!
- Do not skip the salt! These cookies are very chocolate heavy; the salt helps balance everything out.
- For a VERY intense orange flavor, try adding 1/2 teaspoon of orange extract.
- When it comes time to bake your cookies, you’re going to preheat your oven to 325 degrees (F), BUT once you pop the cookies in the oven, you’re going to immediately turn the temperature down to 300 degrees (F)! This low baking temperature gives the cookies a shiny, almost brownie like exterior, and an ultra gooey fudge interior.
- Don’t over bake! These cookies only need about 16 minutes in the oven. Over baking will result in dry cookies.
- These cookies must – I repeat – MUST cool completely on the tray. I usually leave the room for a good 30 minutes before I even think about sneaking one off the tray.
- If you’d like your chocolate orange brownies to look like mine, top them with a few chunks of orange chocolate right when they come out of the oven.
Rich chocolate, vibrant orange, and an incredible texture make these cookies irresistible! Can’t wait to hear how yours turn out 🙂

Chocolate Orange Brownie Cookies
Ingredients
- 1 cup plus 2 and 1/2 tablespoons all-purpose flour (be sure not to pack your flour)
- 3 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 6 ounces semi-sweet chocolate, chopped
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 1 and 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- 1/4 cup light brown sugar, packed
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon orange zest
- 2 large eggs, at room temperature
- 2 tablespoons whole milk
- 7 ounces orange chocolate, chopped (I used Lindt intense orange, but also linked to some other great brands in my post)
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 325 degrees (F). Line two large baking sheets with parchment paper, lightly spray them with non-stick spray, and set aside.
- In a medium-sized bowl whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt; set aside.
- In a large, microwave safe bowl, combine the semi-sweet chopped chocolate and butter. Heat them in the microwave for 15 second increments, mixing in between each, until butter and chocolate are completely melted and can easily be whisked smooth. Whisk in the vanilla, then whisk in both sugars and orange zest. Beat in eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Beat in milk.
- Add the dry ingredients into the wet ingredients, and stir to combine - be sure not to over mix here!
- Fold in the chopped orange chocolate, stirring until everything is just combined. (You may want to reserve a few pieces of the chopped orange chocolate to press onto the warm cookies right after they come out of the oven.)
- Scoop 1/4 cupfuls of the batter onto the prepared baking sheets. Bake one tray at a time, reducing the oven temperature to 300 degrees after you've put them in the oven.
- Bake for 16 to 19 minutes, or until the edges are set and the tops are dark and shiny. Press a few extra chocolate chunks on top of the warm cookies, if desired.
- Allow cookies to completely cool on the baking sheet before serving.
ooh, love that there’s orange chocolate and orange zest in these! i don’t like the advice to let them cool completely though; who has patience when there’s chocolate around?!
I cant wait to bake these at the weekend. One little question, Im in England and we are used to weighing the ingredients. I’ve managed to buy some “cups” but with the 2 tablespoons of butter, it this level or rounded.
Hi Juliet,
I’m in Sweden and bought me some cups too!
2 tablespoons of butter = 30 grams
Baking these tomorrow 🙂
Two of my favourite things, cookies and chocolate orange! This recipe is a dream 🙂

OMG – These are a Chocoholics Ultimate Dream!!! I made them yesterday and if it wasn’t for will-power, there would be none left. They seriously are unbelievable! Thank you – I will share them with friends…No, truly, I will!! Promise.
I just made these. They flavours are great but the texture seems a bit off. Mine turned out a bit puffy and tall and didn’t get the shiny surface. Any idea why this is? I was careful with my measurements and also used Lindt chocolate.
Hi Stephanie. I’m so glad you enjoyed the flavor! Now let’s try and figure out why the texture was off… 😉 It sounds like they may have over baked. It’s possible your oven runs hot, so I would start checking on them a little earlier next time. I hope that helps!
Thanks for replying! That could definitely be it. My oven is not so amazing and seems to struggle to maintain a constant heat. I will try making them again and this time keep a closer eye on the thermometer. whoot! I have an excuse to make them again. Ha ha! They really are delicious. Thanks for the recipe!
You’re SO welcome! Keep me updated on how the next batch turns out 🙂
Mine too
Look fantastic! I’m gonna try to make one !!
Yay!!! Enjoy 🙂
Looks so sweet
I brought these to a BBQ with my boyfriend’s friends, and they were a HUGE hit. I now have new friends of my own because of them. One direct quote was: “I wouldn’t exactly stab someone for these, but definitely a gentle shiv.”
These sounded amazing! I just made them and they’re in the oven right now. Is the batter supposed to be so thick and hard to scoop?
It’s awesome!! Would definitely love to try it. Please tell me can regular chocolate be used in place of orange chocolates as I don’t get that where I live.
You could use semi-sweet chocolate for a plain chocolate brownie cookie.
Hi! These look amazing!!! I am wondering if you actually put the orange extract in yours? If so, did you take the vanilla down to 1 teaspoon, instead of 1 1/2 teaspoons. Since you put a 1/2 teaspoon of the orange extract? Or, did you add the orange extract amount on top of the 1 1/2 teaspoon of vanilla??
I made the batter last night but made the cookies this morning. They are delicious! I would not change a thing. Kept some of the orange chocolate to put on top of the cookies when they came out of the oven. I love orange flavoring! So moist! Thanks for a delicious recipe. I will be making these often.
Oh those pictures are insane. Going to try immediately. Had one question, fonuounthink they’ll do well scooped, frozen and bagged to be baked at a later date? Thank you

Am looking forward to making these. Would really like to know the nutritional values. Calories and carbohydrates. Thanks. BTW…There is a nutritional box but no information in it.
HI i may have just missed this completely when reading through but how many cookies should this recipe typically make? Excited to try them!
I used my small cookie scoop amd and got 38 cookies out of my dough
OMG! looks so yummy!! gonna make this soon… Orange and Chocolate never go Wrong!!
yum! Sounds good! I’ll have to try it! Thanks for sharing!
Oh woow, these look AMAZING! Can’t wait to try them out, my mouth literally waters right now.
I can’t wait to hear how they turn out 🙂
Hi, Can you make them dairy free and substitute the milk for orange juice?
Can these be made substituting the milk for orange juice?
I’m definitely trying this. I love otange flavored treats!
Thank you Ashley for sharing the recipe. I baked the cookies today, but with sea salt dark chocolate. My kids and my husband loved it. You are AMAZING!!! Love from Finland! (Ps. I wish i can share you my pictures)
Hello all! Does anyone know how many cookies this recipe yields? Thanks for the help!
can the batter be frozen?
Sounds awesome! About how many cookies does this recipe make? Also do you think a Terry’s Chocolate Orange could be used in place of the other chocolate? I’m planning to make these fora cookie party competition and not wanting to spend a ton just on the chocolate 😉
HI! I just made these to give as Christmas gifts. It’s a good thing I made other kinds of cookies because this recipe made 11 cookies. Eleven! If I had known this, I wouldn’t have made them. It cost me $12 just for the chocolate! They are very good, but not worth making again, in my opinion.
Hello from Vienna, Austria. Excellent cookies. Thanks for this recipe!
Hi, these look delicious! I’m thinking of gifting them for Christmas. Can you tell me how many cookies one batch yields? Thanks!
Looks good miss, I’ll surely try this.
I like chocolate for stressful times. It is different from the kind I eat. thank you for sharing. I will try it. Maybe strange
Just made this recipe. Cookies taste amazing ….. as they should since they cost about $1.50 each to make! Only made eleven cookies. Good but will not make again at that price. 🙁
These cookies are SO GOOD! I have made there several times already! If I want to make a smaller cookie how should I adjust the baking time?
I like to see chocolate melt on the cake. very attractive.
Hi I was just wondering if I can use salted butter and skip the salt. It’s gonna be difficult to find unsalted butter where I live. Also, can I skip the orange chocolate and add a little more zest? Here we only get lindt and it’s very costly!! Hoping for an answer soon! Thanks
Just came across this and I can’t wait to try them!! They look amazing 🙂
One question, I do not have a microwave (I know I know… it is the year 2018) but I wonder what I can do in terms of melting and mixing the chocolate and butter. Pot on the stove? Any tips appreciated
Just made these, I didn’t have orange chocolate so I just added the orange extract. They would have turned out so well but I accidentally microwaved the chocolate too much. I was hoping it wouldn’t make too much of a difference because it was still somewhat smooth and stir-able, but my cookies turned out dry and crumbly but the flavor is amazing, next time I will make sure to be more careful!
Just tried these on the weekend, and I followed the recipe exactly – and they were perfect! Very much a “Brookie” (cross between a Brownie & a Cookie) My husband ate a dozen, and I loved them too! Excellent recipe with no adjustments needed – that’s rare!
Dear Ashley,
I just finished and tasted your brownie cookies and they are amazing!
Great flavour, great texture and the recipe so accurate and easy to follow!
Thank you so much for sharing!
I’m looking forward to trying more recipes from you!
Kind Regards,
Ermina
How many cookies does this make?
I made these and it made 2 dozen — used a heaping scoop of my 2 TBS cookie scoop. And I cooked them for less time.
I’ve never made a “1/4 cupfuls” of batter when scooping cookies. I feel like that’s the size of a cookie I’d get at a restaurant, not a size I’d make at home.
Thank you for the tips, Devon 🙂
Thanks for such a great recipe! yes they cost a bit more but they are not ordinary cookies.I would serve these instead of dessert, they are that good. I scooped them using a 2 tbl scoop, baked them for about 14 minutes and they were prefect. For those who thought they were pricey, buy the bars at Walmart, they are much cheaper. This is an adult, quality cookie!! Wonderful!
These cookies are HEAVENLY!!! Truly worth the money I spent on buying the ingredients. The recipe is a keeper and I will continue to make them on special occasions!
How many cookies does this recipe yield.
Hi Ashley…Can you please share the recipe ingredients in grams instead of cups?
The cookies look delectable and I’m eager to bak them
HI,
Can i substitute almond milk for the whole milk?
-Ali
How many cookies does this make?
Can I make the batter ahead of time and freeze? I’d like to do these for Thanksgiving.
Thank you!!
Has anyone tried freezing these cookies?
These cookies are amazing and extremely delicious I made them last summer and froze some they freeze very well . But I have a question Ashley . My grandson wants me to make the batter ahead and bring it to his house and bake them together is that possible please let me know . Thanks for sharing that most delicious recipe . Jimmy
Hello,
I can’t wait to try and making these but I was wondering do you add the orange extract with the 1 1/2 tsp of vanilla extract or do you just add 1 tsp of vanilla extract and 1/2 tsp of orange extract?
Thank you kindly
Ohhhh my god these were so good! Made them today and they had such a good balance of chocolate and orange. Will definitely be making this again!
hi….
Your recipes are mind blowing….The only help I need is if you can give me replacement for eggs…As i don’t eat eggs.
THANK YOU
Unfortunately I don’t have an egg replacement for this recipe. But I suggest checking out all of the vegan recipes on my website which are egg free!
I’m vegan and I just made these (super delicious!). Used Camino orange chocolate since it has no dairy, almond milk creamer instead of milk and Bob’s Red Mill egg replacer (you could probably use a flax or chia seed egg as well)
What size is the large baking sheet? I have multiple sheets, can you give dimensions?
Thanks, Noreen
We tried these and absolutely loved them. I added orange oil instead of extract and may try Triple Sec or Grand Marnier next time. Also playing with a raspberry version using Lindt Raspberry Radiance bars and powdered freeze dried raspberries.
Hi! I loved these cookies. Baked a batch of them today. Yumalicious! is all i can say. I loved them.
Can you suggest how to store them? Do I need to refrigerate them or just put them an air tight container & leave them on the counter. Also, how long can we store them?
Very tasty. I made them smaller and cook for 10-12 mins
Mine didnt look like this Yours look amazing mine certainly dont look like the picture, how do you get them to look like that on the top?
Hi,the best combination chocolate and orange..can’t wait to try these..i have a query if I am making half the batch do I need to take all the ingredients in to exactly half the quantity including the eggs?
