Happy Summerlicious Sunday, friends! And welcome to another addition of Sunday suppers! Today we’re talking sloppy joes. A sandwich I don’t typically go gaga for. But this right here, is no average joe… This is a summertime special 😉 Just for you!
The two major twists in this recipe that make it shine and sparkle are 1) The fact that it’s made with fresh Summer tomatoes and basil and 2)It gets simmered down and then polished off with a quick splash of red wine. Anything that gets a big splash of red wine automatically wines – er, wins – my vote 😉 And don’t worry about using any fancy vino! I used a 1/4 cup of 3 buck cooking wine, and it worked like a charm. #Keepingitreal
These sandwiches got the boys vote as being the BEST EVER! And I – humbly – admit, I have to agree with the guys on this one – these meaty bad boys are keepers!!! Hearty, fresh, and great with an ice cold brew… I say you get to cooking a batch of these right now 😉 I just know you’ll love them! xoxo
Sunday Suppers: The Best Sloppy Joe of Your Life
Ingredients
- 3 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil
- (2) 1 pint containers of grape/cherry tomatoes
- 1 1/2 pounds ground beef sirloin
- 1 medium red onion, chopped
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 1/4 cup brown sugar
- 2 teaspoons Lawry's seasoned salt
- 1 tablespoon red wine vinegar
- 3 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
- 3 tablespoons tomato paste
- 1/4 cup red wine
- 1/4 cup basil, chopped
- 4 crusty rolls, split, toasted, and lightly buttered
Instructions
- Heat oil in a large heavy bottomed pan over medium heat. Add tomatoes and cook for 25-30 minutes, or until they're so soft they're begun to brown and burst. Remove tomatoes with a slotted spoon and transfer them to a clean plate. Add sirloin to pan and cook, breaking the meat up with a wooden spatula, until browned. Add onions and cook for another 5-6 minutes, or until onions begin to become soft and translucent. Add garlic, brown sugar, and seasoning salt. Stir and cook for 1 minute. Add vinegar, worcestershire sauce, tomato paste, and red wine. Add tomatoes back to the mixture. Stir in basil. Reduce heat and simmer for another 5-6 minutes. Taste and adjust spices as needed. Scoop onto buttered rolls, and eat!!!

O…my! Have been craving sloppy joe’s for months. As a terminal cancer patient, my Son,21,is my CareGiver. He’s vegetarian but borderline vegan. He especially won’t eat ground beef anymore. But I MUST HAVE A SLOPPYassJoe!! As I added Manwhich to my market list…I stopped listing & started Pintresting (reading recipes on Pintrest) & was so intrigued when I found your recipe & how great you described the flavor!! So, x’d out the store bought can”wich”. Had all ingredients, cooked up the sloppy’ S& BOY IS IT SO GREAT! My Son walked in the door, yelled how great it smelled & proceded to eat 3 sloppy’ son pretzel bread buns! OutSTANDING!! Thank you SO MUCH! I didn’t change recipe one iota! A thousand Thank you’s. Have you ever made these with either ground chicken or turkey? We eat almost no beef. Thanks!

Hi Denise! Turkey meat will definitely work! Chicken may, too – but I haven’t tried it 😉
