Say hello to my latest dinner obsession: Easy Tomato and Spinach Pasta! Loaded with juicy cherry tomatoes, fresh spinach, olive oil, and a kick of red pepper flakes! This quick and easy pasta recipe is fast, flavorful, and budget friendly!
Tomato and Spinach Pasta Recipe
It’s no secret that I LOVE pasta.
There’s just something so cozy and comforting about a big bowl of noodles! It’s pure and simple comfort food. And thankfully, so easy to make at home! Because as much as I love pasta… I rarely order it out. It’s often overpriced and overcooked.
But not to worry! Because you can be enjoying this fuss-free RESTAURANT QUALITY spinach and tomato pasta in about 20 minutes! That’s one of the many reasons this is one of my favorite weeknight pasta dishes!
It’s as simple as bringing a large pot of water to a boil and cooking the pasta. And in the meantime, placing a large skillet over medium heat. Toss in a good amount of olive, tomatoes, salt and pepper, and cook until the tomatoes begin to burst. Add in your garlic and glug of white wine, and cook for a few more minutes, This will create a flavorful tomato sauce without using any canned tomatoes! At the very end, toss in your spinach and cook until soft. Add in the pasta, top with parmesan cheese, and enjoy!
P.S. You could easily make this recipe gluten free by using your favorite gluten free pasta!

Easy Tomato and Spinach Pasta
Ingredients
- 1 lb penne (or your preferred pasta variety)
- 1/2 cup olive oil
- 1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes (optional)
- 2 pints grape tomatoes
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 6 cloves garlic, thinly sliced
- 1 cup white wine or chicken broth
- 2 cups fresh spinach
- Parmesan cheese, for serving (optional)
Instructions
- Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil over medium-high heat.
- Add oil to a large, wide pot and bring to a simmer over medium heat. Add in the crushed red pepper flakes, tomatoes, salt, and pepper, and cook until the tomatoes begin to burst and give off their juices, about 9 to 10 minutes. Use a wooden spoon to gently press the tomatoes if they're not bursting on their own.
- Add in the garlic and cook for 1 minute, or until fragrant. Stir in the wine and bring to a boil, then reduce the heat to a simmer and cook for 5 minutes. Finally, stir in the spinach and cook until slightly wilted.
- In the meantime, add the penne into the boiling water and cook for 9 to 10 minutes, or until al dente.
- Drain the pasta, reserving a 1/2 cup of the pasta water.
- Toss the pasta immediately into the pot with the sauce and stir well to combine. Add in some of the reserved cooking water, if needed. Taste and add additional salt and pepper, if needed.
- Remove from heat and divide among serving bowls. Top with cheese and serve at once!
I tried it, It was awesome. The cherry tomato gave it a nice colour and taste.
Excellent recipe! I added onion and mushrooms. This was super easy and delicious. Quick to make also! Husband l8ved it!
Could you add chicken to this?
I did! It was fine with the chicken. I used precooked white breast meat which I sliced into strips and added before the spinach. It only needed a quick reheat and the time to cook the spinach wasn’t long enough.
I added onions and mushrooms also, was a bit bland for me since I am from India and my palette is used to spicy. But it turned out really good after I quadrupled the chilli flakes, black pepper and added fresh basil leaves, needed a bit more salt too
Excellent recipe. Although I went a little crazy with the garlic.
It was perfect the first time. I learn so much from you as well! Keep it up great post.
Hey Ashley, I can’t keep my mouth shut after watching this mouth-watering pasta recipe images! This recipe looks so yummy! I can not wait to make it at home for my son and husband. Is there any alternative to red pepper?
Hi Walker! You can just omit it! It won’t have a kick, but will still be fresh and tasty!
First time I made it it was delicious. Thanks! Can I add shrimp and if so how?
I added shrimp after I cooked down the tomatoes a little bit
Great flavor, love this simple and easy recipe. Thanks!
Just made it and I used white wine and a chicken stock, it’s amazing! The only thing I’d do next time is I’d like to try adding some bacon and I leave out the chili flakes (I’m pretty sensitive to spicy food). But I give it 4 stars!
This recipe is a rock solid recipe. So rich in flavor and super easy to make. I added grilled chicken that I marinated with white wine and seasoned with Mrs. Dash seasoning. Super delicious and highly recommend.
I also added a little fresh basil.!
I have tried this today. The spinach adds a beautiful flavor.
So easy and yummy! I really enjoy your writing style as well. It makes me want to cook!
Yummy. Love your hearty meal ideas!
super easy to make and so much flavor. tastes like i ordered it from a restaurant. 10/10 will be making again
I made this a couple of nights ago (followed it exactly but left out the red pepper flakes)….and wow, it was so good!! My husband loved it too and we both had the leftovers for our lunch the next day—we’re definitely going to be adding this recipe into our regular rotation. 🙂
Can’t get tired of this recipe! Thanks Ashley
Looking tasty. I will try it soon. Thanks for sharing.
Would it make a big difference if I use regular cut tomatoes? No grape tomatoes on hand.
I was in the mood for a light and healthy pasta recipe, and this was perfect! I used the crushed red pepper because we do like spice, but it wasn’t overly spicy. It was just right! I was in the mood for spaghetti instead of penne, but I used veggie spaghetti for an added vegetarian benefit. I used white wine, but next time I may try vegetable broth to make it slightly different. I could see adding cooked chicken to this, but as is, it’s a great vegetarian meal. Thanks, Ashley!
Used egg noodles instead of pasta!!! Great dish for a good and quick meal!
Delightful & I only added a tad more spinach just because we like it so much. Thank you so much for giving me one more easy one pan pasta recipe to make quickly.
Amazingly yummy! I was a little hesitant about the amount of oil, but I’m glad I didn’t skimp. Bonus that I had all of the ingredients and even tomatoes from my garden.
Easy, simple, and delicious! So flavorful. A great recipe to hold on to, as I almost always have the ingredients on hand.
This was totally delicious and so easy. It didn’t need a pound of pasta though. 1/2 pound would have been more than enough in my opinion. So good! Thanks.
Had tomatoes I had from my garden that I had cut up and had frozen. Thawed out in the microwave and then let them cook in the oil and pepper. It was a little juicier than I would’ve liked but it was delicious and quick. Husband had 3 helpings! Definitely a keeper.
Quick and Delicious! We loved it. I did add the parm to the sauce and it made a beautiful pink color. So good. Will make again!
This was delicious ! I topped it off with some Feta cheese .
What a beautiful, colourful, quick & easy pasta dinner. A super authentic
Italian dish. I also added some mushrooms & black olives. A definite keeper!
Nice recipe, easy to make. I was skeptical about the amount of oil and broth. It worked out ok though for the amount of pasta I made. I used fettuccine. Definitely used more salt too. Unfortunately I did not have pepper flakes but it did not negatively impact the recipe, as it still tasted good. Will likely do it again…!!
I love pasta but couldn’t really find a tasty recipe like this and I would definitely cook this weekend.

Family all loved it followed recipe exactly was a bit spicy but good next time I will add shrimp or chicken!!! Thanks for a simple but delicious recipe.
This was amazing! I added mushrooms and substituted cheese tortellini …it was a restaurant worthy dish!!
Delicious! Husband and I both loved it!
This is good Make sure to add the crushed red pepper flakes. That adds a lot of flavor to it.
I halved the recipe and it still turned out well. My husband ate 3 bowls.
Call Lang is this a restaurant quality meal is 100% accurate! Having read other reviews about adding other ingredients… I wouldn’t want to change a thing from the original recipe. Wouldn’t want to distract from the fabulous oil, garlic, tomato flavor. I printed multiple copies to pass out to all my friends. Can’t wait to make it again!! ♀️

Love the ease of this recipe!
I cooked chicken pieces with salt, pepper and some garlic powder. Removed and followed recipe except for only using 1/2 amount of pasta per previous suggestions. It was really flavorful. Used and served Pinot Grigio wine with the meal.
Can you send me the nutrition info for the Easy Tomato and Spinach Pasta? I couldn’t find it on the site. Thanks!
Hi Sandra! I don’t offer nutritional facts, but there are apps that will do this for you 🙂
Loved it and family loved it! So easy to make!! No need to change recipe. Taste like an upscale restaurant
We all agreed it was yummy but my family likes meat. I threw a pound of chopped up pan-seared salmon on top of this and it was amazing. Spinach and tomatoes pair so well with salmon. I was able to stretch a pound of protein btwn 5 people while still having large portions. I imagine chicken or Pork belly would be winning additions as well.
Another great meal from your site…find myself coming here every single day now. I made it exactly as written and we loved it. Thanks so much for all the yummy recipes!!!
THIS IS AWESOME. I REALLY LIKE THIS .
Delicious! We will make this again
So happy to hear that, Nancy 🙂
Delicious! I added 2 Tbsp. of butter to thicken it and give it buttery goodness!
So glad you enjoyed it – and adding butter sounds like a delicious idea!
Yummy and easy to make. Perfect summer dish with fresh tomatoes.
Loved it and family loved it! So easy to make.
I enjoy how easy and flavorful this recipe is. Using grape tomatoes equals no chopping and a sauce that is not too sweet. Fresh spinach is a much enjoyed staple in our home.
Like many cooks I change a bit to suit our family. With this recipe I add fresh or dried basil and oregano, leave out the garlic, and add dollops of ricotta cheese to the finished dinner.
This is another winner. The sauce is similar to your cod dish that we love. I am wondering if I can add the little sugar, lemon zest, and lemon from your cod sauce to this one? Thank you!
It would be helpful for some of us if you included the nutrition Info.
Hi Judi. I don’t provide nutritional info, but there are tons of apps that you can copy and paste recipes into and they’ll give you that information. Have a great day!
This was delicious! Thanks for the recipe! I added 1/4 cup fresh, chopped basil. I decreased the olive oil to 1/4 cup & increased the chicken broth to 1 1/4 cups.
I’ve tried this last night and trust me it’s awesome. Thank you for the recipe.
So happy you enjoyed it!
I Love Paasta..Becouse This is my only naasta..

I Love Pasta , My Mom Made Pasta Lot Of Times For Me , Its Yummy.
Amazing recipe – super easy and delicious. I was just wondering – is it better to cook covered or uncovered.
Does it even matter?
Thank you!!
This was totally delicious and so easy. It didn’t need a pound of pasta though. 1/2 pound would have been more than enough in my opinion. So good! Thanks.
Thanks for the amazing recipe I have tried the Easy Tomato and Spinach Pasta recipe and my family loved it.
Very quick and easy to make. Healthy and delicious mid week recipe. I use less oil for the tomatoes and more wine and pasta broth to make more sauce as the pasta tends to absorb the sauce. Still a great recipe!
I tried it. first round i fail, but second round i got success and the taste was really awesome.
Love! Love! Love! this recipe. Quick and easy to make. It is a family favorite. My sister requests this dish every time she visits. I have added it to my favorites recipes and prepare over and over again. It doesn’t require a lot time in the kitchen and the ingredients are usually always on hand. It is a wonderful meal for entertaining too.
I made it and it was delicious! All those ingredients came together beautifully!
wondering if I could substitute canned diced tomatoes for the cherry tomatoes
This is a great recipe! I made it tonight and it was really easy and delicious.
We loved this.
Cut the pasta in half.
Added in cooked chicken breast.
Doubled…or more..the spinach.
Delish.
